Founders usually frame this as a budget question. It’s really a time and voice question, and I say that as someone who only gets paid in one of the 3 scenarios.
I’ve watched all 3 up close for 5+ years. Here’s the honest version of each.
Doing it yourself
Cheapest in cash, most expensive in hours. Writing 1 good post takes most founders 45 to 90 minutes, and 3 a week means finding 5 to 7 hours that currently don’t exist in your calendar. Some founders genuinely love it. They tend to be the ones already writing somewhere, a newsletter, long emails, anywhere.
The pattern I see with everyone else is consistent enough to set a clock by: strong first 2 weeks, a skipped Thursday in week 4, and by week 6 the profile has gone quiet again. Nothing failed exactly. The calendar just won.
If you’re the writing type, do it yourself, honestly. You’ll be better at your voice than anyone. Just decide upfront what happens in week 6.
A ghostwriter, or really, a strategist
One senior person who does positioning first, then builds content from recorded conversations with you. The pull here is voice fidelity: your stories, your vocabulary, your numbers, packaged by someone who does this daily. The client time cost drops to roughly 5 hours a month, and I’ve broken down exactly where those hours go.
The honest limits: a solo operator caps their roster, so the good ones are not always available, and you’re buying one person’s judgment. If the judgment is good, that’s the feature. Ask to see documented process and named case studies before believing anyone’s judgment, mine included.
An agency
Process, team, capacity. If you need 5 platforms covered or C-suite volume, an agency structure exists for a reason, and the good ones run tight editorial machines.
The risk is the handoff. A senior strategist runs the sales call, and 3 weeks later your posts are being written by whoever had bandwidth. One of my current clients, a fire protection software founder, came to me from a generic agency where the content technically shipped every week and sounded nothing like him. Buyers in his industry can smell that instantly. What happened after we rebuilt from his actual recorded interviews is documented here, including the $80K deal.
If you go agency, ask one question and watch the face: who exactly writes my posts in month 3.
The version I’d tell a friend
If you have the hours and the itch, write it yourself. If you want your real voice at scale and your time back, hire a strategist who interviews you. If you need volume across platforms and teams don’t scare you, hire an agency and get the writer’s name in the contract.
And whichever door you pick, ask these 9 questions first. They filter fast.
